About Us
The public space belongs to everybody - not only to some We should not live in a society in which people make themselves comfortable at the expense of causing risk for ohers. This is what has been happening to pedestrians in Kosovo. Here, owners of buildings, companies, and cars have usurped the space to walk freely at a time when Kosova has been fighting for “freedom of movement”, free-visa travel, and respect for people’s land in its high-level politics. In fact, the reality of an average citizen in Kosovo is that his simple movement is limited from the moment he goes out of the house and decides to walk rather than drive. This is partially due to the fact that the pedestrian in Kosovo has, so far, been voiceless.
The Usurpation of Pavement project aims to defend pedestrian rights in Kosovo and liberate pavements from obstacles that force pedestrians, including those using pushchairs or wheelchairs, to use the road.
Initiated in Prishtina City Centre, this project aims to identify three categories of usurpers of pavements: those who permanently block the pavements (be those private individuals, businesses or organisations), frequent usurpers (essentially cars), and public obstacles such as trash bins, electricity poles, et cetera.
An initial investigation conducted by our reporters in Prishtina City Centre enabled us to identify and report numerous spots on the map where pedestrian rights are trampled. This map constitutes today a base to denounce usurpers and incite them, as well as the authorities.to improve pedestrian’s condition. Our dream is to turn current usurpers into future Pavement Liberators.
We encourage citizens to participate in the monitoring of this project by reporting their own observations on Kallxo.com, using Kallxo’s app or on Kallxo’s Facebook page. Every report of usurpation sent by the citizens will be verified by our pavement monitor before it is put on the map.
“Welcome to Prishtina’s daily obstacle course”, from our pavement monitor about his pedestrian experience in Prishtina could also inspire you to tell us your experiences.
